Fire Extinguisher Maintenance & Refilling
Periodic inspection and refilling are not a rubber-stamp exercise. They are the only way to know the extinguisher will work the moment it is needed — and what the Fire Service checks.
What it includes
- Visual inspection of body, valve, pressure gauge, hose and nozzle
- Weighing and check of the extinguishing agent content
- Replacement of worn parts and rubber seals
- Refilling with certified extinguishing agent
- Tamper sealing, labelling and inspection tag
- Inspection ring on the neck, under the valve, in the colour of the year
- On refilling: refill sticker in the colour of the year
- Issue of maintenance-refilling inspection certificate and job sheet

Frequently asked questions
What clients usually ask
How often must a fire extinguisher be maintained?
Once a year, by a Recognised Maintenance Company, through its Competent Person. In addition, under Table III.1 of KYA 618/43/2005 as replaced by KYA 17230/671/2005: extended maintenance with recharge at 5 and 15 years (powder and foam/water extinguishers; sealed powder extinguishers at 15 years only) and a laboratory test with recharge at 10 years (CO₂ extinguishers included). Intervals run from the date of installation, and in any case from no later than one year after the date of manufacture marked on the body.
How long does a fire extinguisher last?
Its service life does not exceed 20 years, except for portable carbon dioxide extinguishers and propellant gas cartridges.
What should I check myself?
A visual check that the extinguisher is in place, accessible, with legible instructions and no visible damage. The interval between two successive regular checks must not exceed three months (KYA 17230/671/2005). This check does not replace the annual maintenance.
What markings go on the extinguisher?
At every annual service — and on every new extinguisher — an inspection label with the month and year of the work, the next service due, the competent technician and the company's details. At every service an inspection ring is also fitted on the neck, under the valve, which cannot be removed without opening the extinguisher. When the extinguisher is refilled — at 5, 10 or 15 years, or after use — a refill sticker is added. Ring and sticker carry the colour of the year (KYA 17230/671/2005): white for years ending in 0, yellow 1, orange 2, brown 3, green 4, blue 5, purple 6, grey 7, burgundy 8, black 9.
What marking goes on after the hydrostatic test?
At 10 years, after the hydrostatic test, the re-inspection centre engraves GR, its own symbol and the year and month of the re-inspection on the cylinder. On thin-walled vessels, such as powder extinguishers, the engraving is made on an indelible aluminium label. A separate sticker shows when the next test is due.
What is the difference between maintenance and refilling?
Maintenance inspects the unit and repairs any wear. Refilling replaces the extinguishing agent and fully reassembles the extinguisher. Refilling is also required whenever an extinguisher has been discharged, even partially.
Will I be left without extinguishers during maintenance?
No. We leave temporary replacement extinguishers for as long as the work takes, so the premises remain covered.
Do you collect from and deliver to our premises?
Yes, within Attica: we collect the extinguishers from your premises and return them after maintenance.
