Application

Warehouses & distribution centres

High-bay storage, racking and large fire compartments — sprinklers and hydrant networks.

What we install & maintain

The systems for this type of space

In a warehouse the fire load is high, racks are tall and few people are around — a fire can spread before anyone sees it. Requirements depend on what is stored and on floor area. We design, install and maintain fire detection, hydrant systems, sprinklers and passive fire protection.

Regulatory framework

What governs this type of space

Occupancy categoryStorage (P.D. 41/2018, Ch. B, art. 10): Z1 low risk · Z2 medium (e.g. logistics, paper, clothing) · Z3 high (e.g. foamed plastics).
Fire extinguishersOne per 250, 200 or 150 m² gross area for Z1, Z2 and Z3 respectively (10.5.1).
Fire detection & alarmIn warehouses over 1,000 m², in all Z3 warehouses and in those with three or more floors (10.5.2).
Fire hydrant systemPermanent hydrant system from 2,000 m²; in Z3 from 1,000 m²; in warehouses of three or more floors with a floor over 500 m². Otherwise a simple system (10.5.3.1).
Automatic suppressionIn Z2 over 2,000 m² and in all Z3 — with water or another suitable agent (10.5.4).
Existing warehousesCommercial warehouses with a building permit applied for before 17-2-1989: Fire Service Ordinance 6/2018; from 17-2-1989 until P.D. 41/2018 took effect: P.D. 71/1988 (art. 11). Warehouses within a manufacturing plant (same plot, same owner/operator): JMD 136860/2018. A warehouse in a separate building or fire compartment with its own escape routes and exits is assessed under the provisions for its own use.

Which framework binds a given building depends on the date the building permit was applied for and on its occupancy classification. The binding requirement comes from the approved fire-safety study.

Frequently asked questions

Warehouses & distribution centres — what clients ask us

Which category is my warehouse?

It depends on the goods and their fire load. Indicatively, food, metal and electrical goods are Z1; logistics centres and supermarket, paper, clothing and fertiliser stores are Z2; foamed plastics are Z3. Where the fire load stays relatively constant, classification must be based on the average fire load density: Z1 below 1,000, Z2 1,000-2,000, Z3 above 2,000 MJ/m² (P.D. 41/2018, art. 10.1). The calculation is made in the fire study.

When does a warehouse need sprinklers?

In a new Z2 warehouse over 2,000 m² and in every Z3 warehouse. The code also allows another agent where water is unsuitable for the goods.

How many extinguishers does a warehouse need?

One per 250 m² in Z1, per 200 m² in Z2 and per 150 m² in Z3. We supply extinguishers across Greece and maintain and refill them within Attica.
